These are just some of the creative cubby ideas put forward by clients over the years which have been put into action, and not just full-filling their child’s childhood dream, but also their own!
Veronica from Quakers Hill came to me with an exciting idea for a cubby house for her kids while utilizing it as a fort for her sons and also saving on space in the backyard
Let your kid’s imagination run wild with this two-story cubby, fully enclosed and with split levels separated by an internal staircase.
Available in any size, this fort style cubby can even be used as a sleepout and can be decked out with any accessories, just add your own telescope, steering wheel etc… Prices are around double that of the single story cubby house plus delivery and installation
Small cabin studios can also be converted into loft-style kid’s playrooms with the function of a sleep-out. These can be a perfect and affordable solution for extra room for the kids when expensive renovations are out of the question
General rule of thumb; no council approval required as long as the cubby or cabin is 90cm from the boundary fence, under 3 metres high and less than 20m2 in Sydney New South Wales, or 10m2 in Brisbane Queensland. Electricity for lighting and power points can be organized from a qualified electrician, but no plumbing or water can be added.
Also for your cabin studio to be exempt development you must not use the structure as a habitual dwelling.

Aaron S from Pennant Hills thought of this design and brought it to me with the idea of utilizing the oddly shaped grass area he had in his backyard. He wanted a modern and contemporary cabin studio / teenage retreat for his young kids to be used as a large cubby house.
And of course when they grow out of it, Aarons cubby can easily be converted into an attractive outdoor study room or storage shed, just by changing the colours of the paint
To keep the cubby / cabin cool in summer and warm in winter, foil insulation and wool insulation were installed in the walls and ceiling with a ventilation gap between the two as per installation requirements to enhance the insulation properties.
To add further insulation, doors and windows can be fitted with the option of double glazing and energy efficient laminate glass at an extra price.
